<aside> 💡 This is a design challenge for a language learning mobile app. The goal of the design is that the users find it easy and convenient to learn survival language from the app.

The Challenge

What would you do if you were asked to conduct a business trip in a non-English speaking country? What if you are leaving in just a few days? As you are busy preparing for the trip, the language barrier is haunting you since the only language you know is English. How could you communicate with local people to meet your survival needs?

This is when the app Traveluage comes in. It allows you to learn the most helpful survival phrases in just a few days, and use them to solve your pressing survival needs once you are at the destination.

The Design Process

Empathize

What support does the user need to learn the new language in just a few days?

How can the app continue to support the user when traveling?

Define

The user will be busy preparing for the sudden trip and therefore, he will appreciate having learning plans laid out already and a style of learning that does not take up much of his brain power.

Ideate

How might we help a user quickly learn survival phrases in just a few days?

Prototype

Wireframes were drawn to crystalize the user flow. The hi-fi prototype was created to provide an easy-to-use interface for the user.

Testing + Iteration

Informal testing is done by inviting friends and family members to test the prototype and share feedback. The feedback is then used to iterate the prototype. Some screens are removed because they created confusion in the user flow. The colors used in the prototype are reduced and changed to only yellow in order to create a clean interface and clear path of showing the user where to focus.
